  • “Creeping” and “mushroom pop up” effect question

Posted by Rusty Bridges on September 26, 2005 at 12:27 pm

How could i achieve a “believable” pop-up effect where on piece of land mushroom start poping up all over just like popcorn. I dont want a “fade in” effect using opacity, more like a growing effect, from base to head, basically like in real life, to add dificulty, as the mushrooms grow, i would like them to have like a “creeping” effect over its surface. They are white but as they grow a darkish brown color slowly covers the mushrooms surface…
I hope this isnt extremely difficult!
    thanks

how fast does the “pop up” happen? If it is like a popcorn popping type of effct (quick)
all you need to do to sell this effect is to set your anchor point to the bottom of the layer, then scale up from zero to 100 over 3 to 5 frames.
repeat this layer many times and spread out over you terrain and you have your effect.

As for the color change, you could just animate a color filter (color balance, or hue saturation, color balance or any combo of these)

Even if i change anchor point, when i scale, wont i still have a “ballon” effect on the mushroom, as in getting fatter. Scale changes volumen! I need no volume change on the growing object, it is just as if you pulled a pencil out of the ground. that is the kind of effect i need!

Then you need to make a composition which includes one mushroom and an alpha matte layer (search the help). The alpha matte layer might be a solid that takes up the bottom half of the comp. To reveal the mushroom, animate its Y position so it is first hidden by the matte, then move the mushroom upward so it is visible.

You can then drop that composition into the main composition and shrink it down to size. Duplicate it many times, and move it into various positions in the scene.
