creative suggestions, please
Hi,
I have a very large project that I’m in need of some suggestins on how best to approach it.
I have a client that I’ve transferred hours & hours of old 8mm film to digital format. His objective is to build several DVD’s worth of of “his story”. He wants to include the digital video, pictures, text, etc.
I have all the media and now I need to put it all together for him. He has outlined via time code on the video where to insert the pics, text, etc.
My problem is when I insert the pics, text, etc into the video timeline , the time code then change and therefore effects everything down the line. I considered starting from the end and working backwards. That would work but each time I need to do an insert I would have to do a select-to-end and then move the selected part down the timeline and then insert the new media.
I’m hoping that someone may have a better workflow suggestion.

I’m confused. You should have two timecode views:
source
projectSource (what he looked at to give you T/C) cannot change. It’s fixed.
Project-doesn’t matter what the source is.If he specified t/c for the project, it wouldn’t make sense.
putting the shots in his specified sequence makes sense, but how could have identified I/O points for the project while viewing the source?Douglas Spotted Eagle

hanks Spot for your reply. I gave him a DVD with the transferred movies on and it had the timecode burned to the video.
But I think I see where you are going. By having a “source” time line i would then cut/paste each segment to the “project” time line…therefore building the “project” time code fro lsft to right.

…or you could do what I did in a case like this. Before you insert anything, go through the timeline and insert a marker everywhere he wanted a still inserted. Now you’re not doing a ripple insert and moving everything down the line messing up your timecode. You can name each marker with the photo name as well as the original TC. Then go back and do your inserts.Or as was mentioned above, start from the end of the video and work right to left. Personally I preferred the marker choice in that project I did because if something did happen, the marker showed the original TC.

Thanks for this suggestion. One question – how did you “lock” the markers to the video? If they aren’t “locked” then the video would move but not the marker when you io the insert.

your off to a good start. i edited a very long 3 day shoot successfully this way:
i did the project in sections (separate veg ).
i gave the client a DVD with the timeline code at the bottom for each section.
they told me the parts they wanted and where items were to be inserted.
i placed markers at those points, then started from the END of each project, turning ON the ripple edit before inserting or deleting.
it went great and they loved the finished product.Charlie

Easy. When you go to insert the photo, then turn on the ripple edit. Select all tracks, markers and regions. then the markers will move with the timeline.
