  • Creative Question: Water Effects

Posted by Brandt Krueger on May 27, 2008 at 2:28 pm

    Good morning all,

I thought it might be nice to switch things up a little and NOT have a question regarding anything crashing, asynchronous, off speed, off color, lost, corrupt, jittery, or “why the heck is that coming out BLUE instead of green?”

I have a major underwater-themed project coming up, and I thought I’d poll the cowniverse and see what people really like, recommend, or have pulled off regarding water effects, transitions, filters, you name it.

From the crazy to the subtly cool, what effect packages (or stock FCP or Motion effects) do you just love and have used in your own projects? Are there any that you paid good money for and then laughed at the result? Let it all hang out!

Thanks, and may all your render times be short.

[Brandt Krueger] “Are there any that you paid good money for and then laughed at the result?”

None are good Brandt. Been there done that. All are overused and abused and all are guaranteed to create unintentional laughter.

Hopefully the silly effect at the beginning of this trashy and cliched (but incredibly long-running) infomercial that I cut a few years ago will steer you away from using any watery ripple effects on your titles https://www.drwfilms.com/luminatorsinfome.html.

Resist the temptation if you can, then come back when your underwater scenes are green and not blue, and asynchronous and jittery.

    ArRrRGgHh… Must..resist… temptation….

    must… buy… LUMINATORS!

So hip! SO COOL! They look good on ANYONE!

I particularly like the bit where the VO says “On the court” and the woman swinging the tennis racket looks as if she’s never touched one before. Hopefully I’m not insulting an acquaintance/girlfriend/wife of yours, but I just laughed out loud as she apparently tried to swat a large flying insect with the racket.

The “Oh wow!” from the couple in the pool was also quite compelling.

    Thanks for sharing!

    😉

For water effects, I use the Displace Filter with water acting as the displacement map.

Displace didn’t work for years, only the first frame of the map was used. That’s not a Displace Filter! That is why Nattress and I developed “Telly’s Displace” (also Telly’s Bump Map) in the Telly’s FX filters that come with my book.

I have heard that they finally fixed this. Haven’t tried them yet though.

One time, I made a matte for a liquid-y transition by recording pouring milk into a wide, square glass jar on a black background. You could also try using paint if you want something a little more viscous.

Thanks for the thoughts, folks! I will proceed with caution.
