Creative question on crossfades vs. straight cuts in video slideshow
I’m making a video slideshow of a little puppet I’ve sent around the world. I have a lot of photos even after culling through them. I’ve been putting segments together based on location, eg. New York, Thailand, etc. and then I’ll put them together in a new project. I’ve been doing things like showing 2 or 3 photos at a time so I can show more in a reasonable amount of time. As a matter of course I’ve been putting in cross fades. In the segment I just did, I left out the fades and left straight cuts between the images or groups of images.
Not having that 1 second cross fade means I’ll be able to make the video shorter and it’s less work for me. Both good things. I could also use cuts in places like busy New York and fades for places like the beautiful Smoky Mountains.
I’m just curious what the pros and almost pros think about just using the cut.
I know this isn’t a Vegas specific question but I’m a Vegas 10 Pro user.

Are you telling a Story? If so, what is it? How do you want your audience to feel? If so what is it?
IMO you’re starting at the wrong end. The story comes first not the Method of telling it. Get your story together and the cuts and/or transitions from one mood or energy to the next will look after themselves. They will!

Actually, the photos are only part of it. I’ve created an entire story about how the owl came to decide to travel around the world and have video completed for that. I’ve really put a ton of thought and time into the story so the actual photos of the owl traveling are going in between bits of story telling. They aren’t the whole thing. I have narration and music too.
My problem is that I have a lot of photos and I’m running out of time (and patience). The more I’ve been working on it this evening, the more I’m feeling using primarily cuts for the images will be ok.
