im interested in doing a transition in which i have black lines dripping down from a composition and forming another shape in
a composition below it, almost like syrup dripping off a table into a bottle

Your going to want to look into creating track mattes.
not sure if you trying to create a transition or an effect.

but obviously the drips arn’t going to physically fill up a container, so you want to animate these drip line until they hit the bottom of your container then start raising the “syrup” level with your video or whatever is suppose to fill up this container. the lines need not animate continuously so long as the water line rises. you could also add those fat drip to the lines for an added effect.

    technincall tho,
you need to create the animation with masks or photoshop files with transparency, and don’t worry to much about the texuures of the contents but refining your animation then you can replace the “syrup” with your video.

Here check this out it might help.
