    hi,
im doing a favour job on a pop promo, and the pr company are now asking me to supply 300dpi pdf files from the final cut. is that possible? seeing as its only shot with the 5D at 1920×1080. they want to put stills into the cd jacket i think. in fcp i can output tiff files at millions+ 8mb i think which is 72 dpi, but there is no option for pdf.? whenever ive done this before its been for small press pics etc and ive just given them these tiffs or jpegs or qtime freezes. any thoughts?

    A CD jack is about 4 3/4 by 5… so 4.75 X 300 dpi = 1425 and 5 x 300, = 1500… So you need an image that is around 1425 pixels x 1500…

If you export stills at the best settings, they will be wide enough, so it may work. Just make sure you set everything to best…

To save them as PDFs it’s best to use Photoshop, and make sure you use zip compression, not jpeg.

You can also use Apple Preview, but you may experience image deterioration, as it probably does jpeg compression.

    Nothing to do with FC.
    PSD is what you need.

not sure if you were trying to be rude Rafa, but ill give u the benefit of the doubt and take it as though
im just way beneath you. as i explained the timeline is fcp – so it is, at least to start with, an fcp issue.
Dont worry tho ive sorted out the problem, with the help of C and others.

Nick, sorry if its sounds rude.
I just wanted to say that FC is not the application to do any of the tasks that you inted to do.
FC can’t export PDFs and Fc is not an application to blow a picture 4 folds (72dpi . 300 dpi).

And sorry but, although Christina understood well your needs, you were not able to explain them properly.
If you would have started by talking about DVD covers at 300 dpi, I would have told you how to do it. DVD covers have an standard size, so the size of the picture at 300 dpi is standard too.

Great. Would be interesting to know how you got your PDFs just with FC.

Rafael Amado “although Christina understood well your needs”
yep, she did, her and everyone else i spoke to.
Rafael Amado “you were not able to explain them properly”
oh oops, i just should have known your rudeness was my fault.

Rafael Amado “Great. Would be interesting to know how you got your PDFs just with FC”

see you are right, it must be me thats the idiot…forcing you to write contemptuous replies…
i havent been able to make you understand the question…
i was asking how to create pdf 300dpi still frames, from client selected frames in a 3min film from my FC timeline. (which i have just cut). their ultimate use would be on a promo cd cover being created by a graphics company, they had asked for 300dpi pdf files to be created from my cut.
Fc was the staring point. I didnt think it could be done within FCP that was why i was asking if anyone knew how to do it.
CCow always seems to have great answers from fellow industry pros, and no matter how long in this business i find there are always things to learn, and tips and tricks we can all share. theres no need to post rude or cryptic answers, i suggest its better not to reply at all. All the best.

    Hi Nick,
I’m sorry that you are annoyed because Christina understood your “no question”, while I was unable to “read your mind”. (I haven’t seen her post before I posted; If I saw Christina post I would have wrote mine)
And sorry but I stand on my answer. If you ask again if “there is any option to make PDF’s on FC?”,or you talk about managing “dpi’s” (that term doesn’t exist on video), I will point you to PSD, and if you need further explanations, I’ll give you as many as necessary.
I have no problem to fallow a thread for weeks until people can fix their issues, but I need to understand the issue first; but sorry if I don’t know how to decorate my concise answers to make them sound more pleasant.

‘from fcp’ not “on fcp” ie as the starting point
take final cut out of the equation and you have no sequence for them to choose shots from to start with.
no footage to add to photoshop or whatever you would have suggested!
im not annoyed that everyone understood and one didnt, i was annoyed about the rude and snide, sarcastic replies, in fact everyone of your replies has included sarcastic comments.
sorry to all and anyone to whom my original question caused upset… i think just you Rafa…and .. that it was unclear ,
i was asking how do i get from a chosen frame in my FC timeline to a pdf 300dpi file for print.
    ok mate lets stop there
    lets call it quits
everyone on here is usually so helpfull, and now im starting to rant myself..
i spose a few snide ‘im gonna put you down’ types are to be expected.
you think im a idiot and i think you are at the very least rude – fair play.
ok, quits – end of final reel.

    Yeah.
Whit the springtime some people gets rude, some too sensible and delicate.
Well, better than being allergic to the flowers.
