  • Creating normal maps from hi-poly mesh

Is there a way to create a normal map from an untextured mesh? As far as I can see the only way to do this is using a bump or displacement maps. Unfortunately, I can’t create a suitable bit map to create the displacement/bump.

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks,

With your 9.5 CDs on one of the other discs are tutorials if I remember correctly.

    here’s an online tutorial:

Sorry, after looking closer at the online tut, it’s old skool method. Not using the new 9.5 tools.

If I’m looking at the right thing, the video tutorial on the 9.5 cd is for creating normal maps for the gnome which has already got a displacement map applied. What I want to do is create a normal map from a mesh – a model with no texture applied.

Cinema doesn’t have the ability to create a normal map for a low-poly object based upon a higher-poly object–except for the displacement method. There is a plugin that provides this function: https://www.cinemax4d.de/simplemakerpro/home_us.html

Or if you have ZBrush, that’s probably the best way to do it.
