creating night time look
Posted by Lillian Fidler on April 7, 2009 at 1:13 pmI have some footage which was shot in the daytime but I would like to have it look like a night time shot. Some of it will have bright flashing lights of a firetruck as well.
Any suggestions?
thanks so much,
Lillian

April 7, 2009 at 2:36 pmhere’s a tutorial for day to night conversion. it is using footage a truck and it shows a way to add the headlights, which may be useful for your shot…

April 7, 2009 at 3:35 pmAnd just google DAY FOR NIGHT and you’ll find tons of helpful information that all would have been best obtained before your shoot. Fixing dumb mistakes can be disastrous because it telegraphs FAKE to your audience. If that interferes with your story, it’s all over. Go back and reshoot it or redesign your concept based on your audience’s expectations, not yours.
It’s the subtle things you forgot to work out that destroy DFN such as people wearing sunglasses or hats, hard shadows that shouldn’t be there, squinting eyes, reflections in windows, and action that simply could not have taken place in darkness.

April 7, 2009 at 4:49 pmThank you for all the valuable information. I’ll definitely keep this in mind for any future shoots.
In this case, the clips are pretty short – it’s for a promo for firefighters and it’s matched up to the lyrics of a song. I tried shooting firetrucks at night but again, having limited experience, the shots came out extremely noisy and grainy and I don’t think useable. However the shots in the day are nice and clear and clean. There is a flashing light on the top of the truck that I’d like to be nice and clear but the setting should be dusk or night time. I think I will play around with the settings that I got from the tutorial and see how it looks. Because the clips are very short it may work… Any other suggestions are greatly appreciated.
Thanks again,
Lillian
