I’m going to be sitting down on someone else’s Avid Media Composer just to refamiliarize myself with the system. I’m planning on opening Bins from another project so I’ll have some media to work with. It is IMPERATIVE that i do not change the other project in ANY way.

So, when I open the bin from another project, as long as I don’t delete or add anything to it, I should be fine, right?

By creating my own bins in my new project, it won’t change any media or project settings in the project from which I imported the bins, correct?

I come from an FCP background and am more familiar with how it handles media. I’m familiar with Avid’s OMFs. However, is the only way of importing media from another project to import a bin?

There’s probably more than one way to do this, but I would just copy the omfi folder from one computer on to the other. Use the media tool to scan the drive w/ the transferred folder on it and drag the clips into a bin (or bins). Of course, if you have a copy of the project, the clips will re-link automatically when you launch.

You can open the bins and use anything out of them as long as you use your own bin for sequences and any effects etc. If you don’t put anything into the other bin or take anything out, you can use whatever is in it with no problems at all.

Best to make copies of the bins you want to access and place them on, say, the desktop. When you create the new project, open your bin copies(ctrl-O or ?-O) you can then do anything you want to these copies and not affect the original bins. Toss them when you’re done and your other project will not be affected in any way.

Thank you. My concern was taking up more HD space by copying the bins. The space is limited (and it’s not mine).

What is the best way of copying a bin to a new drive?

Really the bins are quite small. It’s the media that takes up lots of space – same as with FCP. Bins can be located using the finder and copied to a usb thumb drive or your ipod or whatever. You don’t need to do it from within the Avid, although it’s simple from there as well. Open the existing project, open a bin you would like to copy, and from the file pull-down menu select SAVE BIN COPY AS. Then save a copy to the desktop to open in your new project. If you were to burn a cd of the bins, just copy them off to the desktop before opening, as the locked state of a cd may prove troublesome if you try to open the bin from there. At least in the old days it was a problem.

Here’s one last way to accomplish it.

Create your new project. From the file pull-down menu open a bin from an existing project. Create a new bin in your project. Alt-drag all the master clips from the existing to the new bin, which creates duplicates and leaves the existing master clips alone. Close the existing bin and work with the master clips in your new bin

    Hi!

I have to create a project for a video with the following aspects:

    1920×817
    Square Pixels
    23,98
    Codec H264
    Audio 48KHz 16bit

Final Cut lets me create a project the matches those aspects. But I didn’t find a way for Avid to do this. If I create a 1920×1080 video size project, my video of 1920×817 gets distorted. Do you happen to know how can I create a custom project in Avid so that it fits the aspect of my video?

    Best regards!!!
