Creating new clips on capture
Hi All,
Why is it that when batch capturing my HDV footage, FCP creates new clips on every camera stop /start. I see in the clip settings that you can enable / disable this but when I un-tick it, FCP won’t capture at all. I either get a “general error” or a “streaming error.”
I’ve landed up with about 10 clips for every clip I logged. Is there anyway to turn this off?
Its a JVC BR-HD50. My capture settings are HDV and I’m capturing using the HDV firewire basic setting.Thanks in advance,

JVC 720p30? Always breaks on the shot change. No way around it. Not sure why it’s a bad thing, but you can’t switch it off.

It’s 720p25… Really? Pity, Basically its a bad thing as it feels as though fcp is “stealing” my organisational skills. If that makes sense?!

FCP isn’t to blame…the HDV format is. Because of how HDV works, every start and stop causes a break in the GOP stream.
Way to fix this? Get an HD capture card and capture as a different codec, like ProRes or DVCPRO HD. That allows for longer captures while retaining the timecode.

That hasn’t been the case w/my experience w/HDV. I work w/a lot of HDV 1080i60, and occasionally 720p60, and I can log and capture just like I do w/DV, DVCPro HD, D-Beta, etc., as long as I remember to turn the stop/start detection “off.”I’ve never run into a problem like the OP’s where capture would fail if the start/stop detection was turned off.

So you are saying that the HDV (especially the JVC HDV1 720/30P) workflow is hopeless? I’ve just switched to HDV, bought the JVC
BR-HD50U deck and was contemplating the JVC HD200 camera. I like the tape/HDD back-up recording set-up, but might take a look at the EX1 workflow as an alternative if the JVC HDV1 scenario is more headache than it’s worth. With so many HD100/110/200 and now 250’s in the market what are most folks doing for post? If it’s the HD capture card and bringing it in as ProRes or DVCPro HD, then which cards sing the best with FCS?

Ignore me. Listen to the guys with HDV experience. My HDV experience consisted of capturing HDV as DVPCRO HD…and once as ProRes. Never dealt with it natively.

Hey Shane,
I’m all for using a card to capture HDV footage as ProRes. I am just getting into the HDV/HD world and I want to minimize my headaches. If it means buying a Blackmagic or AJA card…then so be it. I’m OK with leaving firewire by the wayside. Any thoughts on these cards?

Both are great cards. Both do a lot of similar things. I am sold on the AJA cards because the Kona 3 can upconvert SD to 720p and 1080i (Decklink only to 1080i) as well as cross convert 1080 to 720 and 720 to 1080…the Decklinks cannot do that either. BUT, it all depends on what your needs are. The Decklink cards still are great…they just don’t fulfill my needs.
