I was trying to use the slice tool to evenly divide a photo into 50 layers but still keep the image so it looks like 1 photo. Am i using this tool correctly or is there another way to do this?

    if you can help,
    Thank You!

No.. Slices are for making web rollovers…

rather make a selection.. then press Cmd (Ctrl) J to move it to its own layer

    Richard,
I am breaking up a large Matte painting in to 10 layers. I want to cut it up in photoshop. Like you have mentioned above.
What is the best way to update the master image. After I have cut it up into layers. I want to make sure that when I get a new updated Painting. That I will be able to make the same exact selections. Granted the resolution will never change.

    Try this instead

Open the Image… Convert it to a Smart Layer

Add a Layer mask in the shape you want for the first piece.

Duplicate several times (for each piece)

Modify the mask for each Cutout

Then later you can replace the Smart Objects Contents with a new image
