  • Creating internet video with FCP without having to use 3rd party programs?

I created an mp4 the other day that was 5 minutes of Xbox Live play. I uploaded it to youtube to show my step brother what it’s like so he would be convinced it was a cool thing to subscribe to.

I’ve made MP4s before just using the standard “broadband medium” format and uploaded them with no problems. The sizes were not huge at all and the video still looked good.

But when I edited my game footage together, then tried the same process, the mp4 came out to be 11 MB. And it was only 5 minutes.

All I could figure was that maybe it was so large due to all the movement in the game, plus all the colors and different graphics.

I get on youtube and I see all these videos that are huge in length but they’re still on there meaning they are 10 MB or under (I think).

So to reduce the size of the mp4 I chose “streaming medium” or “broadband low.” Honestly it’s been a couple of weeks and I can’t remember but it was a reduction. You can still see the video but it’s very grainy now.

Here is the video I uploaded that’s only 5 minutes (also notice how grey it starts out, but that goes away):

Here is anothter video that some other person uploaded that’s about 10 minutes and look at the quality. They told me they used Adobe and Vegas Video to make it.

Is there a way that I can create a similar video to that longer video and have it look the same (as far as quality) with FCP HD 4.5? I can’t buy any 3rd party programs right now, so I was hoping there was a way that I could use Compressor , or a fromat in the conversions I could get help with.

    Thanks for any help,
    Vinnie

    PS
Don’t watch the both video in their entirety, one of them (the good lookig one) is 10 minutes. Unless you’re just a Halo fan. If you’re wondering how these people make the Halo video they just get one player to watch all the other players. The one that is watching is the “camera man.” But it’s actual game footage they recorded while playing the game.

11Mb for 5 minutes is extremely small.

In FCP use compressor and output h.264 for the best output. I keep the keyframes on auto, and the frame rate usually in half, 15fps, which looks fine and lowers the file size by half. Set the video to be about 300-500kb/sec data rate.

You can lower the audio to mono and 60-80kb for great quality. Just keep it 16bit and no lower than 22khz.

What matters in the end is whether people have to wait or not. Somewhere around 500kb/sec people are going to have to wait before the qt starts playing. Below that, even DSL should be able to play immediately and keep up.

You tube video looks like utter trash. Why are you worried about their file sizes?
