Creating good artificial edges in footage derived from the footage itself?
I already have a way to do this but I’m wondering if there’s a faster way. I have this footage of a raspberry moulding. There are regions of the mould that are more and less dense/opaque. I am able to use multiple masked adjustment layers to draw those hidden contours out to create natural-looking edges in the footage so the new edges aren’t just a hard line or a digital fade. I use multiple adjustment layers to make the fade super gruadual. This piece of footage didn’t need that method so much but some more complex footage does.
I’ve attached an image detailing the process. This technique is just using the footage itself to find new edges, so I’m wondering if there’s another technique or effect or something that could find these contours for me and provide the basis for the new edges. Maybe an effect that could find detect more opaque parts in the footage which could then be used as a matte for an adjustment layer that could further refine the new edges?
It would just be nice not to have to coordinate the different masked adjustment layers, each with effects (Hue/Saturation & Levels) that gradually make the fake edges for my manual process shown in the image. Thanks!
