Hi, I need to generate cg fire to create a burning photo. I’ve tried Matt Dallos’ exercise available on the library section https://library.creativecow.net/articles/dallos_matt/fire.php since this is exactly how I want mine to do, but I’m stuck in page 1 already. I can’t find where fractal noise is. I’m using After Effect 6.5 instead of 5.5 (what Matt used).

Later I found out that the AE version I’m using is a Standard and Fractal Noise is only available in Pro version.

Does anyone know another way to create the same effect? Your help is very much appreciated.

    Thank you very much.

if you have photoshop, you could try using the render>clouds filter to generate a still image to import into ae.

the clouds filter tiles at 128 pixels (if i remember correctly), so create a psd that is 128 pixels, choose black and white in the color swatches and the choose filter>render>clouds. to double check that it does indeed tile, choose filter>other>offset and shift the horizontal and vertical pixels around to see if you see any seams.

import that into ae, place it in a comp and add effect>stylize>motion tile (hopefully motion tile is in your version…). it sounds like the horizontal needs to be scaled, so set tile width to 50. then set the output width and height to fill the screen. now you create the vertical movement by keyframing the tile center to move upwards.

you’ll probably also need to add the brightness and contrast effect to beef up the contrast some.

you won’t get the evolution change that fractal noise has, but this may get you close. you could try to create a few render>clouds files and disolve them in over time to create the ‘fire’ displacement map loop to try and fake the evolution option in fractal noise.
