Creating damaged video look
Posted by Ryan Adams on July 30, 2008 at 4:36 amTrying to create the look of damaged digital video, where the video briefly becomes slightly mosaicked. If any one know of a plugin or a simple way to do this it would be of much help. Also looking for a way to give the video that distorted signal look where it becomes all wobbly.
Thanks,

July 30, 2008 at 7:18 pmthe plug in set “DAMAGE” by digieeffects is EXACTLY what you need for this. I wrote a review of the software on the net. (google damage review) they are great tools and affordable!
good luck

July 30, 2008 at 9:51 pmThere is also a filter in the Boris Continuum Complete package that is dedicated to this task. The filter is called “Damaged TV” and is available for all hosts. You can download a free two week trial version of the filters from here http://www.borisfx.com/downloads. After the trial period has expired, the filters will continue to render but will add an X watermark to the image. You can remove the X watermark by purchasing a license.
I hope this helps.
Peter.

July 30, 2008 at 10:29 pmcinelooks film damage plug in is one of my favorites.
But the BEST deal is Damage. $99 for 4 individual plug ins dedicated
to television damage right down to the source level, different video signals and a variety of control settings. freezing, cable digital blockiness, and much more.I like boris stuff as well, just much more expensive, and not the
total focus on the look you are going for, that the 4 damage effects
can give you, plus, they render in realtime and FASTER. Im sure you can download a demo as well, or like I said, check out the review of Damage online, I go into much more detail.no, I do not work for digieffects 🙂
good luck

July 31, 2008 at 11:49 amIf you don’t want to buy plugins at the moment. It might be a good idea to study examples of this effect. Like on Youtube you can find several “damaged video” examples. Take the Cloverfield movie trailer.
I think it would be possible to recreate these effects just by using several static partly transparent “damaged / blocks” images. In combination with the time remap effect and some sound effects.
Good luck!

July 31, 2008 at 2:46 pmIf you’re using AE there’s three bad TV presets in there. Just type TV into that search bar in the effects panel.
You might be able to do the blocky distortion by duplicating what ever needs to be distorted and adding a mosaic, some sort of blotchy luminance map (fractal noise or something) and some noise and extra contrast and stuff. Then the time remap would really sell it so the blotchy, blocky layer would be out of sync a little bit.
Garage Band has some cool promo stingers that sound like somebody looking for a radio station. Those work great for things like the Cloverfield distortion.
