  • Creating custom Effects – Similar to Presets but a lot tidier.

Hi, I’d like to know how to create my own custom effects for AE.

I like the way that AE can save Presets, but is there a way of saving these presets to be loaded back in a bit tidier?

As an example of what I mean, load up the “Expressions Sampler.aep” from the Browse Template Projects menu, load up the Comp “bounce” – see how the top layer’s Effect is named “Bounce”? …is this not a collection of Expression Controls that are bunched into a tidier package?

I’d like to create something similar where there would be quite a few controls (from AE’s default set of Effects) that are not needed to be visible/edited.

I realise that this is essentially a question asking how to write effects myself; though – can it be done without knowing any scripting or code-writing?

I could be tempted to look into scripting if needed; If so, where should I start?

    Thanks in advance.

Here’s a link to Jim Tierney’s (one of the masters of plugin creation) take on creating your own plugins – it’s way beyond me:

i think you’ll find what you are looking for here:

basically, those effect properties are just expression controls, but you can hack the presets xml file to make the individual effects look like properties of a single effect.

note: you can also change the name of any applied effect by selecting it (after applying it), hitting enter (or return) and typing a new name for the effect. once saved as a preset, when applied (from the preset) it will have the new name. useful when adding expression controls to control various properties, you can give them some relevant name.
