I need to create a bluray of a wedding video which was shot in 1080i via a Sony FX7. I read all over the place that you can burn it direct from the time line in Vegas. I am a little lost as to how I go about this and there is nothing in the Vegas Help on bluray.

I assume I go to RENDER AS but clearly need some pointers on what I should be doing and what format to render in. Any advice. The discs I plan on using are Verbatim Blu-ray BD-R 25GB 4x.

I realise there is no menus etc and the clients are okay with that. They just want the video on BD for future purposes.

Nope, bad assumption. To render directly from the timeline you use Tools | Burn Disc | Blu-ray Disc… (that’s if Movie Studio Platinum 8 has this option)

Thanks for that John. Sure enough version 8 does not support BD, hence the reason I could not find anything in the help menu.

Looking at upgrading to Movie Studio HD 10 Platinum Suite as I really can not justify going Pro for what I need. I have proven already that I should not ‘assume’…so…will I be able to open an existing Vegas project from v8 in v10 to burn to a BD? Surely the two are compatible.

Yes, the Sony products are always upward compatible and if you ever want to switch to the Vegas Pro version, the Movie Studio projects will open in Vegas Pro as well (but not the other way around). But it’s always good to ask and not assume. 😉

Next question. I now have Vegas 10 and need to create both a DVD version and BD version of a movie. For DVD in the past, I use the PAL DV Widescreen template in Vegas and select ‘best’ for the full resolution. This way, when I use DVDA I do not have to re-render (which I believe reduces my quality). This I have found produces the sharpest results when viewing.

So, do I have to render from Vegas twice; one for DVD and once for BD and then send to DVDA OR can I render once in Vegas. If so to the latter, what settings should I use in Vegas.

Please try and be specific about your version of Vegas when posting because most people assume that when you say “Vegas” you mean “Vegas Pro”. Since Vegas Pro 10 doesn’t exist yet, I can assume that you purchased “Movie Studio 10” and that’s an important distinction to make in the future so that people answer your questions correctly.

So, do I have to render from Vegas twice; one for DVD and once for BD and then send to DVDA OR can I render once in Vegas. If so to the latter, what settings should I use in Vegas.

I render twice in Vegas but you could render for Blu-ray only and burn that with DVD Architect to Blu-ray and then change your DVD Architect project to DVD Widescreen and it will re-encode to DVD MPEG2 for you and burn to DVD. This is probably the simplest way of creating both.
