  • Creating an Alpha Channel???

    Posted by Steve Cohen on June 30, 2007 at 1:10 am

    I am taking the lower third from the Tech Blue Theme and modifying it to be basically the white bar at the top I want to Create an alpha Channel so can just place the .motn file in anywhere FCP and it will be transparent.

    I don’t want to have to place my background image into Motion, because it will be used in several different places and I may want to slide it a little.

    How can I do this.

    Thanks

    Well the main thing is in project properties turn background opacity to zero and then export as a Motion project or in a format that supports Alpha channels such as Animation or PSD.

    Thanks Noah;

    I checked and the project properties are set properly.

    I think the issue is that the is a Lens Flare Element that is not (or will not allow) and alpha channel to be set properly.

    The exact template I started with was the Tech Blue Lower Third from Motion 3 and I tuned off the User Content layer and all the layers in “Lower Third’ except the Titlebar-White to get the lower third I wanted, but it seems like the Lens Flare Element is causing the problem.

    Anyway around this.

    I really want to make this a Master Template that I can just trhow in from Final Cut and change the text info.

    Thanks

    Can you post a still- not quite sure what you’re having problems with from the description.

    Noah;

    There is a still posted at https://bellsouthpwp2.net/m/e/megacolor/images/Lower_Third.jpg

    I made the backgroung white to illustrate what is happening.

    Whatever is white in the still (normally Black) shows is transparent.

    The area that is black around the lens flair remains black when I bring it into FCP.

    Also I’m not rendering it out, I’m bringing the .motn file directly into FCP, this has always worked in the past.

    Thanks

    I’ve been playing with this exact same thing this morning.

    The lens flare seems to not work as an alpha channel unless you have a drop zone behind it within the template.

    Exporting it as a mov file with alpha or exporting it as a master template for fcp doesn’t change anything, it still renders with a black background behind the lens flare.

    The lens flare element is using a fill option within shape>style tabs of the inspector.

    It has been set to work with the media drop zone within the template which is set to see through its fill layer.

    The way I quickly fixed the problem was to uncheck the fill box and tick the outline box.
    Then set the brush opacity to 0% and the width to whatever but not 0.

    Seems to have worked. If I knew more I’d look around within the blending settings of the layers.

    Thanks, I was running into a millions ways online to mess with blending modes, adding drop zones, master templates, blah blah blah. When using the Tech Blue template in Motion 3 the project has a black bakground which you can remove. You then find the lens flare they supply has a black background no matter what.

    You’ve described the only way to fix this issue.
    Through the Inspector go to Shape>Style and turn off the fill.
