    Hey everyone,

    I’ve got this scene with a boy and girl at a bar, and they are having a very intimite conversation. There is also a bartender, en he’s telling what has happened in the bar the last few days.
    I’ll ask the bartender to lip, and afterwards I record his text.
    Now here it comes: The sound of the bartender should be eddited this way that you get the feeling the couple is inside a bubble and he doesn’t come through. You don’t have to hear what he says, as long as you can hear he’s talking it’s ok. His voice is very distant.

    Which audio filters should I use? Or is it better not to do this with fcp and do it with a specific audio program?

    A basic approach is that the voice can be mixed down and all high frequency taken off to give a distant muffled effect. Filter for that is a low pass filter with the frequency set down to about 800khz.

    A more sophisticated approach might be to use convolution reverb to make the sound seem like it is coming down a tube or coming through a mattress. Convolution reverbs will process the sound and change it based on an actual sample of how sound impulses are affected by an acoustic.

    This will need a sophisticated audio program which supports convolution processing and suitable sample. There are heaps of free samples out on the net. I have vacuum tubes, iron bath tubs, flower pots, gigantic spaces like the Taj Mahal all found on the net. I use SIR2 as a VST plugin inside a Fairlight Xynergi DAW.

    A slight variation on that EQ that has worked for me is rather than just losing the highs, set a mid reqency of about 4kHz and a fairly wide q and turn the gain right down. That way you get that distant/muffled quality with a bit of hf which keeps it reasonably intelligible.
