    Hi

I’m busy working on the opening graphics for an african jazz music show, i’ve got chroma key footage in a “3d club” created in AE. A sorta flat 3d world of graphics. I need to create a spotlight, but the one you see in a smokey enviroment where you can see the light beam. I’ve thought of recreating one in a dark room with a smoke machine, but doubt i’ll be able to get the correct movement and control i need.

Does anyone know how i can create this in AE?

Trapcode lux will allow you to render “visable” light from AE’s point and spotlights in a comp. Check out their website http://www.trapcode.com for some visual examples. To get the lights to be “smoky” you could try and animate some fractal noise, and play with the transfer modes to get a cool effect. Trapcode also makes another fantastic plugin called Particular which has many canned and easily customizable particle effects, many of them some pretty realistic smoke. They have demos for all of their software so you can try them before you buy them. Take a look.
