Creating a slug in Premiere Pro
Posted by Mikkell Khan on October 15, 2008 at 11:36 pmIs anyone familiar with the ‘slug’ option from Final cut Pro. Where you could drop a thing called a slug on the timeline and a layer of black would appear over the entire screen, no matter how big it was? Is there such a way to do this with premiere? I have a few pictures that are smaller than the size of the video and when I want to show the picture alone, I don’t want to stretch them out to the video size. I’d rather have them their normal size in a black space.

October 15, 2008 at 11:53 pmWow, thanks man.
Now I know for life. 🙂
One more question, Final cut has an ability where you can change the blending mode of a clip. It works very well in cases where you have dark footage, and if you put that same footage over itself and put the top layer as an ‘add’ blending mode, it will light up the clip without flushing out the colours.
What is the equivilant in Premiere?

The blend modes are all in there. I know, not a name I would have picked either, but you can’t ask an engineer to think of a user friendly name 🙂

October 16, 2008 at 1:13 amYup, that’s it. Premiere is officially as good as final cut pro now for me. 🙂

October 17, 2008 at 2:59 amOk, one more question. If I wanted to blur out someone’s face, and have the circle blurry effect over their head. How do I achieve that? (basically I want to know how to insert an item native to premiere pro that is not just a square or rectangular shape) or would I have to create a slug that is square and then use stuff like radial gradient to create that kind of effect?
Sorry for all the questions, I just want to completely be independant of final cut pro as these are things I could normally do in that program.

October 17, 2008 at 3:42 amWell, there are many way to achieve the effect.
The easiest way would be to duplicate the clip to a track above, apply a blur effect, then apply a garbage matte to isolate the area around the face.
