Hi there! First off I’d like to say that ever since I got After Effects I’ve come to love using it as a resource for a bunch of handy tricks and tutorials on things I wouldn’t have thought of myself nor would I have read of it a book. I’d especially like to thank Aharon Rabinowitz for his time remapping tutorial as it solved an issue I was daft in trying to figure out.

Alright, on to the conundrum. I am working on a 1280×720 (720p) video that contains a bunch of different montage clips and one of the pieces is a fake CNN clip about 7 seconds long. I’ve recreated all the graphics and text that’s necessary but I’ve run into one problem with creating the news ticker. Now had the clip encompassed the entire screen I wouldn’t have an issue but since it is on one side of the screen I’m having issues with making the text only appear within the confines of the clip. Is there any way to manipulate it to where, as it scrolls from right to left, to make it appear only within the confines of the clip and and disappears when it reaches its other boundry?

I’d really appreciate anything you can tell me, though I’d request that you keep it to laymans terms as I’m still a beginner when it comes to AE. Thanks!

Add a rectangular Mask to your footage with the end of it on the edge where you want the text to stop and set its mode to ‘subtract’.

You could also check out some of Andrew Kramer’s free news templates found at:

    Hope I’ve helped,

Thanks Pat. I can’t believe I didn’t think of it in this context before; I knew you could do it with footage, but I didn’t not know you could do a mask with text. Cool.

Oh, and I actually am using Kramer’s template; found that the other day, but thanks anyway.

    Again, thanks for helping.
