  • Creating a keyable motion graphic for AVID

Posted by Kyle Ferris on June 15, 2005 at 3:41 am

Hi, I am trying to render out a few simple motion graphics created in AE. The graphic itself is mostly a few text layers and one layer of text with trapcode shine applied to it. Normally I work within adobe after effects and premier to moving files back and forth is easy. But when I render out of AE, in both premultiplied and straight, none the keys in avid xpress pro allow for a clean key. Any advice on how to render out a motion graphic to work in avid, i need it so this graphic will appear over video and be as clean as possible.

    Kyle-

It might help folks here if you posted more details about your configuration: MAC? PC? What version of AVID? Etc.

Rest assured, this has happened to a bunch of folks. Here’s a link at the ADOBE site that probably covers a lot of what you’re facing:

    https://www.adobe.com/support/techdocs/322898.html

Depending on what system/software you’re working on, you’ll probably need to download the appropriate AVID quicktime codec and render your clips in AFX using that codec, but I could be wrong.

    Cheers,
    Jason

You also need to make sure that in your settings window above where it says “straight” or “premultiplied” that in the color settings you chose RGB+Alpha. Also you have to make sure you chose a codec that supports alphas like the “animation” codec.

My configuration is a PC workstation, dual processors, the works…
I’m working in AE 6.5, and want to make the graphic keyable for Avid Xpress Pro 4.6
I have made sure RGB and Alpha channels were exported, but i did not know u needed a codec for the key to work. Also, this is for a friend who cuts in an AVID symphony, so i want to make sure it is keyable there.
If i obtained the codec for xpress pro, would that be something a symphony would have already, or would he have to also get the codec. I feel like i’ve seen many editors easily key elements similar, if not more complex with ease, so i am wondering why i am having such difficulty. Also to note, I have tried rendering the graphic out with a transparent background, as well as a version with a black solid. In both cases, i got the same, impoverished result.

I guess I don’t fully understand the direction you are moving, but I am working on a Mac and exporting for a Avid Adrenaline. What I do is I create a file using the “animation” codec in After Effects exporting as a quicktime and I export it as RGB+Alpha with the setting “Straight/Unmatted”. When using these settings what should happen is one single file should be exported containing both the color channels (RGB) plus the alpha channel and it should be in the .mov format. When imported into the Avid, they should check their import settings for quicktime to recognize and interpert the built-in alpha channel. This is the setup I have used and haven’t had any issues. Let me know if this helps! Thanks!

This may sound like a stupid question, but what is the animation codec and “where” can i find this either in AE or in something i have to download?

Animation is a standard component of every Quicktime installation. You need to just select it under the Options on the Output module in AE.
