creating a halftone pattern
Posted by Wangbar on August 24, 2007 at 12:34 pmHi
Does anybody have a technique for creating a halftone/newspaper print style effect on video or is there a (free) plugin available to create this effect? Any searches I’ve tried just throw up expensive plugin suites which include the effect as part of a larger package…
Thanks!

August 24, 2007 at 2:02 pmHi,
One way to do it is to export your footage as a Tiff sequence and then use an action in Photoshop to add the Filter>Sketch>Halftone Pattern filter to it. Obviously then you need to import it back into AE. It’s a clunky workflow, but it will get you there.

August 24, 2007 at 2:41 pmits clunky, but if you needed a color cmyk halftone, it may be the easiest way (…easiest, free way…).
halftone from pete’s plugins (mention above) will only work with luminance, and thus, will only create a black and with halftone. you can duplicate your image, separate out individual color channels for each, set those channels to luminace, then apply the halftone plugin and use that result as a matte for a colored solid to create a color halftone pattern.
another plugin is retrodots there are more options on it, but for what you are looking for peter warden’s halftone will work just as well, even a bit easier…

August 24, 2007 at 7:44 pmyou’re right, you could use card dance… create a grid of circles (or halftone shape of choice), motion tile would make that easy.
then apply card dance and set the image as one of the gradient layers and set x and y scale to use that gradient layer as its source… intensity would work for black and white halftone, you could use multiple layers, each using a different color to separate channels.

January 6, 2008 at 2:56 amhello, i was hoping to make a halftone effect also with after effects. i was interested in the card dance approach. and i was looking for a tip or two…i made a grid with a shape layer and i applied card dance to that grid. i then applied my image to the gradient layer 1 and used scale and intensity for both x and y…my problem is with the cleanliness of the effect…i cannot seem to make it look clean. my cards are splitting the halftone pattern. i think thats my problem. maybe you could give me a tip or two on how big your pattern was and how you split that up into rows and columns…i think that may help me out a little…thanks…
