Can someone explain to me how to create a flat map of a basketball or volleyball for instance? Like the flat maps of the earth you see around, so I can use the cc sphere effect to create a 3d looking ball. I have a 3Ds Max but I am just getting started with it and don’t know how to use that yet.

    Thanks for any help

gotcha, but how do I create the map itself? placing the ball texture on a flat surface to be turned into a sphere.

    Thanks

photoshop baby, black lines, orange background, and lighter orange polka dots (polka dots?) distributed evenly. The map will get a bit funky at the top and bottom but just dont show that part!

Here is a freebie PhotoShop plugin that compensates for that pinching at the poles you want to avoid:

Spherical Mapping CorrectorThis filter produces texture map correction for spherical texture mapping.
