Creating a Directional Opacity Property or Map?
Just for clarity, I am trying to reproduce a similar effect as seen in the motion gaphics intro for this clip, from 00:00 to 00:002 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WVAJBR07ryQ
Notice how the NODE text fill proceeds downwards, filling in the alpha. Ultimately, I am trying to get my own Text Layer’s opacity fill to not only increase in value, but the actual change in opacity to start at a certain point, and “spread”

Could you achieve what you want with an animated Luma Matte?
Animate a precomposed black to white Ramp and use that as Luma Matte on the text.

You could also just animate a mask, or a couple of masks, and accomplish the same thing. The new Mask Feather ability in CS6 could really help out on this.

I agree with both Ridley and Joseph. Using a luma matte will give you the desired result.
Also you can just simply use Linear Wipe Effect with some feather value.

Convert the text to a shape layer and animate the gradient fill, which has opacity stops as well as color stops.

I am going to go with this solution, although it looks similar to the luma matte one as well.
Thing is, I found the “gradient” button, but I have not found an “animate gradient” option.
Also, how can you adjust the status of the gradient?
Is there a way to make a gradient act as an alpha mask?
right now, all that I see is a solid black and white linear gradient with no option to set a “fade to alpha” gradient in the Fill settings.

“In the method Todd describes you would adjust the gradient opacity stops to your liking and animate either the Start or End Points and perhaps the Colors.
One issue is that converting the text to outlines means you need to put all the characters in a Group then add a gradient fill.
