  • Creating a DCP using QUBE

Posted by Erin Bohn on July 1, 2011 at 4:39 pm

    Hello,

We just got QUBE at the company I work at and need to make a DCP. From research I am finding there is more to it than just throwing the setting on in compressor. Can anyone help me out with where to start?

We currently have it loaded as a 29.97 10 bit uncompressed quicktime file with both 5.1 surround sound and the stereo audio tracks.

    Thanks!!

    Hi Erin,
    Your right.
    That is another story (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_Cinema_Package).
I think this is a good point to start to dig:

Search other post from Russ, and Google “DCI” (Digital Cinema Initiative) if you need more info.

Ahhh this is all so confusing. The gal I talked to at QUBE said it is as easy as just putting the setting on in compressor. Has anyone ever used QUBE Master Export before?

You can use QUBE Master Export to do it, but you should really do your research so that you understand the settings. One tricky thing about Compressor is that you have to bring in the audio as a 5.1 file to it and use the attach video button to create a 5.1 DCP.

The other HUGE problem is that your file is 29.97. This will create a DCP that isn’t compliant with DCI projectors and servers. It has to be true 24 fps (not even 23.976. I’ve told the guys at QUBE that they shouldn’t let people do that and I know that they’re working on getting it more user friendly.

I am using Qube Xport and FCP/Compressor to make DCP – we are a small arts organisation using Qube as a way of avoiding expensive post-production companies – and i have read everywhere that the dcp MUST be in 24fps to be DCI compliant. yet Qube Xport allows you to make a 25fps DCP from a 25fps quicktime. i have watched the 25fps DCP in the local cinema and it looks fine. So, my questions are, is there any specific reason that a projectionist would be unhappy to receive a 25fps DCP? Is there a reason why a venue couldn’t or wouldn’t play a 25fps DCP? And if the source file is 25fps is it best to stick with 25fps for the DCP or convert to 24fps [using cinetools etc] in order to be compliant with DCI?

Many thanks in advance for your advice.

    Adam.

Since only true 24 is part of the spec, 25fps MIGHT have issues on SOME servers and systems. There are a lot of different servers/systems out there and to be safe, I would go with true 24. But you could keep it at 25fps and just see if someone has an issue with it. But depending on when you find out about the issue, it might be too late for you to try to fix it and ship out a new file to them.

Again, I’d stick with trying to be as close to DCI as you can get.

    Hello Adam:

I am very interest Qube Xport. Would be able to share the cost or approximate cost of it? I went on their website and the price is not listed, nor can it be purchased online.

    Many thanks,

    Debbie
