I’m working with AE CS6 and creating a 2.5D model of a car using flat photoshop layers.

I’m now at the wheels and they’re round. I have a tred texture layer. Is there any way to wrap this texture to a round shape, like a cylinder using expressions?

I already have a circular shape spline setup. Is there a way to track the layer to that shape in a 3D space?

I know that there is a script out there called ‘Cylinder Plus’ but it is not free. If anyone has an alternative plugin that is free, to save time i’d rather take that option.

in CS6, using the ray-traced renderer, you can get half a cylinder by setting the curvature to 100%. Maybe you can use two layers to create a full cylinder.

I’ve used CS3 for a very long time, I’m new to CS6, how would I access something like that?

On the Advanced tab of the comp settings dialog, select Ray-traced 3D as the renderer. You should then see Geometry Options show up in your 3D texture layer. That’s where you set the Curvature. You’ll want to increase the Segments to get a more believable semi-cylinder.

Be aware that the ray-traced render times can be painful if you don’t have one of the supported video cards.
