Im starting to create a 3d city using ae, but was wondering what the best way would be to doing this.

    should i
    A) mask out 2d buildings and make several layers of them moving them slow past the camera

    B) use an extrude function…is there an AE extrude function, or am i remembering invigorator

    C) use 3ds max and then import the 2d movie

my goal is to have a fast flyby with 3d stroke whipping around the layers. possibly have the camera pull up to a billboard, where a video would be playing

    i wish i had an exampe…

If you happen to use C4D, you can download the free plug-in “CityGen” and it will generate a complete city instantly.

I think it will be the best way:
    >use 3ds max and then import the 2d movie and camera datas into AE
    >then a video could be playing on a billboard
    >there are some plugins for 3DMAX which can be used to create a city

Hmm, maybe im looking for more of a cardboard cutout design. something dark, red and black. similar to a sin city animation.

Do you want them 2D or 3D though?

Color doesn’t matter because you can do a textured look in AE and a flat cel look in 3D. The point being any look in either. It’s a matter of building the world. If you will never see the dimension of the buildings then AE is clearly the easiest solution. If your camera will rotate around or fly through the city then true 3D is clearly the easist. But whatever your color scheme, either app will do it.

im still debating. i know having 3d stroke go behind and in front of layers is a problem, but it could be worth it. im probably going to make rows of buildings in photoshop, and then just bring them in layer at a time.

you can check out a piece i did that sounds like what you want to do at jeremywebbmedia.com. click on harvest moon promo. i did it by manually building the buildings, but it would be easier to use box creator.
