  • Creating 3-D light beams?

Posted by Mepler on March 31, 2007 at 3:57 pm

I’m trying to create a field of elipses that glow directionally (all in the same direction). The glow should emulate a light beam, like that of a flashlight. I want to make a camera movement through this field, which would mean that the beams would have to appear to be 3-D.

    Any ideas?

Here is an earlier response using ae lights and a script:

Lux is the slick way to go, but here is the only alternative to I know of.

    https://www.petertorpey.com/tutorials/volume_light/

Click on the link at the bottom of the page, the second to last sentence is the “Download the script” link. Put the .jsx file into the AE Scripts Folder. An earlier user of this had rendering problems,

when he copied the Script Text file with his Safari using “Copy File”, he got “funny little text objects” between each line of the expressions, when he deleted these everything was OK. I just downloaded the .jsx like I said and all was fine.

This is the only soution I know of for the Luxless.

Hey, yikes, thanks for the link, I had not seen that one. Very cool.

Allow me to add that CC Sphere, a set of masks and CC Ligth Burst (or is Light Rays?) can emulate some of these effects. Of course, it’s not true 3D nor is it actually volumetric. But it’s fairly simple to build and control.

See any of the various Mirrored Ball tutorials (theanvel.com has one) and there is an effect preset in AE that has this illusion. I’m not at my AE machine today but it’s not hard to find in Bridge or Browse Presets,
