  • Create shapes from vector layer .png or .eps file. or rotate 3D logo

Posted by Sander Van pelt on January 9, 2024 at 8:46 am

    Hello all,

I would like to make a short 3D video in which a 3D logo revolves around 2 buildings past each other. This logo is available in .png/.psd or .eps format.

Now I have managed to create a 3D logo with the “shatter” effect in a precomposition. Now I can adjust the Z position of the Anchor point of this logo in the main composition. But if I adjust the Y-rotation value, the logo does not make a circle around the Anchor point but simply rotates around its own axis.

My knowledge of AE is not yet extensive. I am expanding this by also following the Creative Cloud Learn themes.

Now when I look at the theme “Work with 3D”, I have to use the function “shape from vector layer”.

    However, this is greyed out.

In this theme, the logo is also an Adobe Illustrator file (.AI). However, I do not have Adobe Illustrator and cannot convert my logo into an .AI file.

How can I ensure that my logo revolves around those buildings? Buildings that I also want to give depth in order to be able to use the shadow of these buildings once the logo reaches a certain point.

Thank you in advance for your responses and help

Can you group (in 3D) to a null that will do the rotation for you?

Sorry without the file, I have no idea how you set this up.

    Hello Eric,

I added my project to this post. You may laugh your head off at how difficult I have made this, but as I mentioned in my 1st post, I am an AE beginner/my AE knowledge is not yet great. and I am also going through the Creative Cloud Learn themes to increase my knowledge

I cannot say with 100% certainty what a null object is. Let alone how to use it.
So what steps would I have to adjust to make this logo revolve around the building?

    Thank you for your help.

    For info, I use AE 2024 (24.1.0)

I teach at a local college on the side.

    No need to explain.

I will look at it tonight.

I had to find another computer with CC2024.

I dont like upgrading till all bugs are worked out.

The building part could have been easily done with multi-layers of the buildings image.

Rotoscoping is overkill for what you want.

Slight of hand trick where at some point the logo is behind a layer with a masked building then in front. You will need to learn that part on your own, too much detail for me to get into.

Since I didnt see any shatter working in this file I wont have time to fiddle around with it.

I will dig up some old tutorials with 3D and Shatter as well as the masking setup for your buildings.

To add, your logo as vector wont work with Shatter as far as I know.

You would need to create a 3D version for the spin around the building then a separate PreComp for the shatter effect.

But after that you can’t do much with the shatter layer other than do a slight faux 3D space move with the rotations.

You would need to get into C4D (I use Maya) for that. Unless someone here can add to this.

Here is a decent tutorial with the Shatter plugin:
