create mask not shape layer
Been using AE for years and suddenly I cannot create masks. I select a layer with a source picture, and using the pen tool, start to create a freehand mask. Instead it automatically creates a new shape layer. I cannot get it it to create a mask on the layer selected. Same effect if I use the rectangle tool. Been using this for years – am I being really dumb and missing something?!

That is a weird one. -
I’m not sure if this is the real fix, but a way you can work around it is by creating a shape layer first, and then using those tools on that layer.
Layer > New > Shape Layer
And then use Pen/Rectangle Tool.

Have you made sure that this icon is turned on in the Tools Panel??
