Create a DVD compilation from old DVD’s
I wanted to confirm that when using DVDA3 your MPEG2 files won’t be re
compressed if you don’t make any alterations to the files. The reason
that I ask is that every year our holidays end up as a new DVD. We
stated making them many years ago so I have ones shot on VHS, & Mini
DV, some are mono, most are in stereo, most are shot 4×3 while the last
few are 16×9..When showing the family the latest holiday it was suggested that I
should make a compilation DVD of all of the best bits from these trips.
At first I rejected this idea as being almost impossible or if not
impossible I would have to get the segments to re rendered which would
be undesirable. But the I’ve been thinking about it. None of the
original tapes from the oldest DVD’s are still available, but I have
some programs that should make this unnecessary. For instance DVDShrink
would allow me to open a VOB file & extract a chapter & save it.
VideReDo can easily covert the VOB into a MPEG2 file which should not
need re rendering. All of the old DVD’s are likely to have been encoded into at different
bit rates but I don’t think that this should matter provided that I
don’t bring them into Vegas & try to rejoin them all into one file. As
I understand it I should be able to drop the various files onto a
background in DVDA & proving that the total of these files plus the
space required for the menus they should not need any re rendering. I
would have to set the project to 16×9 which would mean that the 4×3
segments will have black bars tight & left but this is OK since the new
disk would be made for showing on a 16×9 screen. Are these assumptions
correct? Any what about de interlacing will this cause a problem? I’m
sure that all of the older files would be interlaced. I know all of the
more recent ones are progressive scan files. Would I have to, or could
I if necessary convert the old interlaced files to progressive without
re rendering either using Vegas or some other video tool?As for the audio if I took each VOB file or the same file converted to
MPEG2 & imported them into Vegas I feel that it should be possible to
add a new track for narration. All of the original audio tracks are
either just the original sound and/or the original sounds with music.
I would need to dip the volume of the original track every time
narration was added to a scene. & I seem to recall that there might even
be a script out there somewhere which could do this automatically.
Again I’m thinking of rendering only the audio out as a new track &
having it as a n alternation track on the DVD. The new extra track, one
for each chapter, should slot into DVDA without a problem. Is there any flaws in myassumptions or other things that I haven’t
thought of?
