Just got a new G5. The mouse is more like a squirrel. A light touch causes it to jump around randomly.

Anyone ever heard of this? Did I get a bad mouse? Is it a setting (I couldn’t see one for “random jumping”)

This is a good old fashioned one button G5 mouse.

Is it a wired mouse or wireless?

If wireless, metal, cordless phones, microwaves, etc can interfere with the signal. Also, replace the battery.

If corded, plug it directly into your Mac and NOT into your monitor or your USB Hub. Make sure its plugged in well (unplug and re-plug). Lower the sensitivity in your system preferences.

Unplug all other USB/Firewire devices while troubleshooting. While you’re at it make sure you don’t have any old mouse drivers installed (Logictech, Microsoft, etc).

Finally, if you have a Wacom tablet (or other brand) you probably have something sitting on it and that is causing the problem. Unplug the tablet and see if life gets better.

Oh, one more thing. Buy a good mouse like the Logitech 1000 or 510. I love Apple, probably more than anyone, but they are a decade behind in mouse design.

Thanks. Sorry I wasn’t clear. Its the wired mouse that came with my brand-new G5.

Brand new mouse…I don’t think it’s a mouse problem, it’s probably a surface problem. Shinny, reflective, pattern, etc surfaces will make it impossible for a optical mouse to move correctly. Find a solid, flat, medium color paper, move it around on that, see how it works. Probably solve the jumping around.
I have a nice Logitech mouse on a black semi gloss surface, couldn’t use it at all. I printed a full sheet of gray, cut it to my desk, taped it down, now it works great.

    Good Luck,
