I’ve been try to render some effects intensive layers within a moderately sized AE 6.5 comp and my MAC G5 Dual 2 Gig crashes about a quarter of the way through the renders, and I’ve tried quite a few.

A couple of things confuse me. First the render window says I’ve got 2047 MB of RAM when I’ve got 4.5 Gigs of RAM installed. Second, thinking the crashes may be memory related I turned on the Disk Cache but still, the system crashes.

I’ve never had this problem before. This comp and these layers are using a number of effects plug-ins, possibly more than I’ve used before (that’s one reason I was precomposing some layers)

Anyone have any idea what’s going on here?

    Thanks,

Just a few thoughts. Its a slower but more reliable way of working. Try rendering your movie to a tga sequence then re-importing that sequence if it renders and rendering your quicktime movie. Since you will be rendering frame by frame you will know exactly what frame crashes, and be able to narrow down what plugin conflicts you may be having. This usually crops up with cracked plugs, just a note if your using a ‘demo’ 😉

Just wanted to update the “Render On Crash” post I made.

It appears now that an expression I had been using was the culprit.
I’ve rewritten the expression and everything seems to be working fine with no crashes on renders thus far.

I want to thank Herb for his suggestion on tracing down the culprit. I also want to direct anyone who seems to have rendering and memory issues to the archives. Search “Secret” and follow the directions.
