In brief, after an Apple QT software update, FCP now crashes when I try to reopen certain projects as well as their backups and autosaves. Other projects do open and when they do, I notice that Boris 3d Text is missing from the dropdown menu in the Viewer. What’s my best course of action?

    Here’s what happened:

PS and FCP were both open. I got a notice from Apple to perform a software update. Stupidly I didn’t close PS or FCP, okayed the update. At the end of the update I got a message that the computer needed a restart. I closed PS and FCP, hit “restart” and went away. When I came back the screen had a circle with a slash through it, and the little circle that resembles a clock with no hands or numbers. I couldn’t make that screen go away through the keyboard or the power switch, so I unplugged the power to the computer.

On restarting and reopening FCP, I could open several projects, but not others. I suspect that the projects that won’t reopen all used Boris 3d Text. (Message: “The application Final Cut Pro quit unexpectedly.”) One of the corrupt projects was open when the software update/computer freeze-up happened, but I am pretty sure that the other one was not. I have tried many of the autosaved versions and project file copies that I made — they all crash except for the very earliest couple, when the basic media was captured but there was no editing. I’ve tried trashing pref’s, repairing the system drive in Disk Utilities (which did report that there were issues), Disk Warrior on the RAID, but not yet Disk Warrior on the system drive.

Any advice would be most gratefully received. Once I solve this, I want to learn more about what to do when the circle-with-the-slash shows up. Thanks!

    Bob,

Of course you have your system drive clone sitting safely nearby at the ready, don’t you???

    Use it…

I agree with Rafalaos, running Disk Warior on the raid array hardly seems germaine to this problem.

Agreed, but I DON’T have an up-to-date clone of my system drive. Do you think I should wait to make one before I use Disk Warrior?

And, if DW doesn’t recover Boris, what is the best way to get that back? Reinstall FCP?

Hi — just a note to the pasture, as well as the COW programming mavens. This got posted three times because each time I tried, it seemed not to post. Sorry!

I do like the new “related topics” at the bottom of the posts.

    Bob,
To run DiskWarrior any moment can not cause any harms.
I run it once a week or every two weeks. Like that you really prevent hangs, freezes, slow-downs etc.I pass it to the HDs some times, but when you feel the effect is when you pass it to your System HD. In the end the HDs where you save your footage, documents etc it may have few hundreds or even few thousand of files. That is not too much. But the MacOX system is made out of few hundred of thousand of files, and to have this well organized is critic.
    Cheers,
    Rafael

Just curious — any theories as to why I had this crash? Was it doing the update while FCP was open?

Have you ever seen that circle-with-slash?

[Bob Cole] ” Was it doing the update while FCP was open? “
    Bob,
If you install FC with the application open, the minimum you can expect is a crash. When you install you need to overwrite files that you can not overwrite because are open.
