Activity Forums Adobe Premiere Pro Crash – crash – crash this, can’t be normal

I do find that Adobe programs get slowed down by trying to find files across a network, or on a drive that goes to sleep.

This may actually be an issue with Mac OS, as I have found some similar issues with Finder since switching to Lion.

Making sure that drives don’t go to sleep, or pulling more media to local drives has helped with slow downs here.

    Hope this helps.

@Gerald, Right now I have everything in an internal raid (with apple raid card) so I think this is not an issue, BUT!! I think I have a BIG problem if this is the case.
I am getting a 32tb array that will connect via Fiber to my two edit stations. This drive array is where all my media will be located. Do you think Ppro and other will have an issue with all the media being in an array connected via fiber?

We have a fiber connected SAN and it works well. You will probably want to experiment with where to save media databases, previews, etc. We are keeping a lot of that on the SAN and I’m not convinced it is the best strategy.

I had some issues with G-RAID drives going to sleep when they weren’t getting accessed enough in a project/render and similar situations with Ethernet connect computers and drives. I really do suspect that this is an OS problem.

I will say that we have had plenty of issues with Apple Raid Cards. We replaced a few and, in one tower, we just gave up using a Raid Card.

    Hope this helps.

It does. What were your issues with the raid card? I’ve never had issues with it, other than the famous “Battery failed (code 0x#0 = 18) message

We have had battery failures. One card wouldn’t correctly make a RAID set. Another one wasn’t recognized by the system at all. Random reconditioning that would happen during a work day, thus killing performance.

Apple always honored replacement or repair. It just didn’t build a lot of confidence in the product.

what did you replace it with?

We also added a SAN connected with fiber. It works nicely with FCP7 and Premiere.

I mean the Apple Raid card, what did you replace it with? or do you not have an internal raid anymore?

I’m glad to hear about your SAN – because that’s what I’m getting in a couple of weeks

Sorry. We also have external Sonnet and GRAID SAS storage.

We continued to use the Apple Raid cards until recently. Apple replaced or repaired them. One machine never worked correctly and we attached a Sonnet tower.

The reason I mentioned the Apple Raid Card is, based on the problems we experienced, perhaps the RAID itself is contributing to the crashes. As an experiment, you could try running the job off of different drives and see if you get a different result.

We have learned here that RAIDS are tricky things and can start going bad long before they register a fault in the management software.
