  • Crash after log-and-capture

I’m an FCP editor with three years of FCP experience. I’m running FCP 4.5 on an older G4 Tower with dual 1.2 GHz processors and 768 MB RAM. FCP crashes every time I close the log-and-capture window. I’ve run through a whole gamut of fixes — reloaded OSX (up to 10.3.9), reloaded FCP software, reformatted drives, checked/swapped RAM, bought a PCI card to take the FireWire drives off the main bus, and reset the firmware. No luck. I forgot to say that most of my home log/capture is on FireWire drives, although I also tried to fix the problem by using an internal ATA drive as the destination drive for media — still no luck.

Any ideas? And thanks in advance!

I wish I could offer some advice, but I’ve been having the same problem. I just make it a point to resave the project right after finishing a capture and before closing the capture window. It happens on both my 1GHz G4 Tower and my 867MHz Powerbook. I don’t know what the %^$#*! the problem is.

I just thought of something…I could be totally off..but I’ve experienced weired stuff like that on a PC.

What type of video card are u using… Since the graphic part of capturing can be demanding…maybe the video card is not strong enough?

I’m experienced similar problems on my G4 and I’ve noticed that I have a 16megs video card…So I’ll be changing that to a 128 or 256megs ATI card.

    good luck

Counting myself, you’re the fourth FCP editor to say “Oh my gosh, I’m having the exact same problem. I haven’t found a way to fix it.”

I suppose this is (mildly) what it feels like to have a rare, seldom-documented disease.

I have a video card installed, but the log-and-capture problem persists whether I use the card (which I don’t usually use) or the built-in G4 FireWire ports! So, yeah, good idea to check card I/O problems, but it’s probably not the culprit in this case. But thanks for trying!

[Kevin Morrison] “I have a video card installed, but the log-and-capture problem persists whether I use the card (which I don’t usually use) or the built-in G4 FireWire ports!”

Were not talking about the same thing….

When u capture, and u see your video in the preview window on your computer, your using your video card.

(probably an ATI with 16megs or ram)

I know on a PC, DV software uses direct X for previewing on the monitor, and some cards dosen’t support Direct X, I don’t know about Mac, but If you haven’t found the problem yet…check that out, you never know…

In the beautifull world of computer, I’ve learned to never assume.

If it was working for a certain period, then I’d say that it would be less possible, but If you always had that problem…

ah, yes, the beautiful world of computers. never assume!

okay, i see what you’re saying. i’m not at that computer right now or i’d report on what’w what in its video world, but i wonder if one other item i omitted might be relevant. in one of my many fcp reinstalls i did to try to fix this problem, i paused in 4.01 for a few minutes to see if the computer would have the same problem. it didn’t. however, it’s not really an option for me to stay in 4.01, as i have several large projects going in 4.5.

anyway, in my mind, the problem is software-related, and the problem is in between 4.01 and 4.5. maybe. (never assume!)

I had a similar problem and upgrading my video card did the trick. I have a G5 Dual 2.5ghz If you have the cash its worth exploring.

I’m still not back at the computer, but now I see what you’re getting at!

If memory serves, I have two ATI/Rage 128 cards that date back to mid-2000. I wonder if I need to upgrade the drivers? Hmm…
