CPU upgrade for Premiere Pro and Magix Vegas – Advice on cores, clock speed etc.
Hello,
I’m interested in upgrading my PC to improve editing with Premiere Pro CC, Magix Vegas 16, Photoshop (and potentially After Effects). This particular topic is in regards to the CPU, what kind of improvement I should expect to see, and the importance of cores vs base clock speed.
My current setup is:
i7 4790k
GTX 1060
16GB Ram
SSD’sI’m looking to upgrade to something like:
i9 7940X
GTX 1060
64GB Ram
M.2 scratch discIn order to have 64GB ram and M.2 drives, I’ll need to upgrade my motherboard and CPU, and so I’d like some more info on the CPU upgrade as this will likely be the most expensive part.
I’m mainly doing editing, usually online editing with FS7 files, both HD and 4K, XAVC-I. I also occasionally edit R3D footage and it would be a bonus to edit it online (at a lower playback debayer).
I suppose my main questions are: What kind of performance increase should I expect with the i9 7940X vs my old i7 4970K. Are we talking massive? I’m trying to figure out what sort of money to spend relative to improvement. Furthermore, how important is core count vs base clock speed / turbo clock speed, as my current CPU has only 4 cores but fast speeds (4790K: 4.0 GHz vs 7940X: 3.1GHz). The main improvements I’m looking for are preview speeds, general editing & grading speeds and rendering times, loosely in that order.
I appreciate this is a broad discussion, as we’re talking about several different programs that inevitably utilise computer components differently, but any advice would be appreciated.

The upgrade looks good, but I would not marry that rig to such a low end GPU. I would go 1080ti-11GB instead of the 1060. What you are looking for the GPU to do for you is 4k display, OpenCL results, and NVENC stuff.
1080ti:
FP16 (half) performance — 177.2 GFLOPS (1:64)
FP32 (float) performance — 11,340 GFLOPS
FP64 (double) performance — 354.4 GFLOPS (1:32)1060:
FP16 (half) performance — 68.36 GFLOPS (1:64)
FP32 (float) performance — 4,375 GFLOPS
FP64 (double) performance – NoneThere was a minimum spec published by Sony way back at version 10 that stated the AMD 5770 was minimum for OpenCL acceleration. The 5770 did about 1,100 FP32, NV1060 is only about 3x faster than a card from 5+ years ago.
11GB of VRAM also will allow you to work in resolve at any level with Red footage, if you wanted to.
Not sure there is going to be much gains in RED formats in Vegas, as I do not think Magix has done anything in that area since Sony incorporated it into Vegas.

Thanks Aaron. One thing that has been confusing me is that Vegas has not once used up more than about 10% of my GPU on preview or NVENC render, and Premiere is using about 2%. I have monitored this using the app Process Explorer under ‘GPU Usage’.
I just ran a test previewing R3D footage on Vegas and GPU usage is about 2% with GPU enabled in preferences. Rendering the footage out from Vegas uses only 0.4%. In Premiere, playing 5K R3D my GPU usage is about 15%. Obviously my RAM and CPU is maxed out.
So I’m wondering if a higher spec GPU is needed?
