    Hi,

Im looking into buying a new mac pro (probably the 6core 2010). Im currently running a 4core 2009 model. I know timing isnt great with probably new macpros around the corner (or not)… A hackintosh is not really an option because its not supported and I need the power now,so I cant wait till windows release!!

the machine Ive now slows down at rendering because it cannot decode and encode 2 dnxhd (185x) at realtime. So I wanted to know if the 6core 2010 model can do that?
With the money I save (instead of the 12core) Im probably buy the cubix expander for more gpu power)

Do you guys have any reference how many streams the different cpu models can decode in realtime in resolve?
Because I need fast rendering for dailys (prores 444-> dnxhd, and dnxhd->dnxhd) with just one or two nodes!

    Thanks
    Best

what do you mean by “how many streams ” ?
isn’t one shot at the time for dailies ?

sorry I meant how many fps the different cpus would give me for rendering. at the moment I get about 18fps when rendering dnxhd->dnxhd.
I want to have more than realtime when rendering, so I can spend more time grading and less time rendering…

You can export the project, tell me what to setup and I make a 8 core 2011 5.1 model render test for you if you want.

If you need more speed, and you’re only doing dailies, and you’re only using one or two nodes, I would strongly suggest getting a second machine rather than one very fast one, splitting up the work using either multiple source drives or shared storage, and “ping ponging” which machine is being used as a workstation and which a renderer. The incremental increase in speed from a faster CPU won’t be particularly dramatic if you’re using a single machine approach. The way to do things faster is to be prepping and grading at the same time you’re rendering. The only way to do that is with more than one CPU. In the Mac world, the base Mac Pro costs about half as much as the fastest Mac Pro, but using two machines and splitting the work will be much faster in terms of total turnaround. You could even use iMacs for this and do it almost as efficiently. Or maybe even 3 or 4 Mac Minis.

    Just a thought.

Here we got really interesting idea. How to make render nodes for resolve on mac ?

    😉

@Sascha I would be interested in ProRes4444->Dnxhd36, and Dnxhd185x->Dnxhd 185x. Would be great if you could test those two. Thanks!!

@Mike Yes I get that, I thought of using the machine I have now for doing some rendering. But is there a better, more efficient way then copying the project file to the other machine, relinking/copying the media (if the media is not on a network) and start the render there?

Because I’ll be getting the media on a 4drive Raid and want to work from it and render then to the network.

    I totally agree…
By using a shared database and hosting footage on a server, this will work so much better and you have the first system free for the real work.

Have you done the shared database before? I want to implement that, and haven’t been able to find any substantial documentation on it.
