Activity Forums Apple Final Cut Pro Legacy CPU question

We need to pick up another MAC for our off line editing suite. I want to still run the latest version of FCP on the computer. How far back can we go in purchasing a used G5. I see allot of 1.8 duel processors for sale and that would be fine. Most times the system would be editing footage digitized in Apple Pro Res. Thanks

Then you don’t want a G5. ProRes is not supported on very many G5’s. Requires a LOT of CPU horsepower for that codec.

We do have a MAC G5 2 dual processor that is over 3 years old and it does work with Pro Res no problem. That computer does have Kona LH card in it for rendering 10bit. Is that why it works? Thanks Walter.

The Kona does nothing for rendering.

We could not get our G5 Dual 2.0 to work with ProRes at all.

The G5 Quad 2.5 with the Kona 3 in there works just fine.

The one thing is we will only be using it for 720p at 30 frames, so it does make relatively small files. The 720P at 60 frames runs OK on our old G5 2 dual. We have a budget constraint for this system so I was looking to get something for under $500. Will do more homework.

I recently did a stretch of work on a system outside of my studio, on a dual 2.0 G5. The footage had already been captured to ProRes before i got there. Everything seemed to be OK for the first while, but when rendering, the clips from time to time would slip within their in and out point, yet keep the proper TC of the frame that should be playing. This happened most often when there was an overlay or dissolve over, or into the clip.

Recapturing the footage at 10bit worked like a charm and all jumped back into the proper place.
