I have a 1.15 GHz processor, and 768 MB of RAM. The computer is about 2 1/2 years old. I use Vegas 5.0. Mainly do weddings and memorial events. For a wedding project 1 hour in length, I’m looking at 6 – 8 hours render time, depending on # of F/X. For a simple memorial, with 60 – 70 pictures, some keyframing, titling at beginning and end, I’m looking at roughly 1 hour to 1 1/2 hours of render time.

If I was to get a new computer with something like a 3 GHz processor and at least 500 MB of RAM, still using Vegas 5.0, with the same examples as above, what kind of Render Time would I be looking at, roughly? I’ve looked at the Casablanca Solitaire system that a friend of mine has, and it’s very quick, BUT, I love my Vegas. Funny how you can get sentimental over equipment and software.

When rendering, the bottleneck is the cpu.
So, when it gets 2 times faster, you can expect
render time to tend to a half.

In your workflow compare the time it takes to edit
a project (which isn’t going to be much faster) to a
time it takes to render it.

Consider upgrading your CPU only. I have a DELL which started life in 2001 with a 1.4GHz Pentium 4, and I upgraded it to the max the motherboard could take, which was a 2.6GHz Pentium 4 and the difference in render speed is just about what the math indicates. Your PC seems to have plenty of RAM; in my opinion about double the amount you need, if you dedicate the PC exclusively during rendering.
The point made about editing vs. rendering time is an important one!
