Imitation isn’t just the sincerest form of flattery. When it comes to After Effects, building on shared techniques is a great way to push the envelope. Consider Andrew Kramer’s recent tutorial on simulating raytraced reflections posted on the COW. Andrew’s technique for simulating raytracing is really cool and it works for all sorts of things. Except for 3D. When Jon Okerstrom watched Andrew’s tutorial, the first thing he thought of was Zaxwerks Invigorator and ProAnimator. Jon’s tecnique follows. Download the demo and follow along.

Jon Okerstrom, I think the same when I see and make the andrew’s tut, (how to make this reflection with Invig?, I try few time until a got the right technic (the same you described) to do that. Very nice tut (I little late for me), but with it, I confirm that my technic is correct, thanks.

    Hey Jon,

It’s great that you made a tutorial about this.

I use myself the very same method for AE and Invigorator. I have to explain it many times to co-workers. Now I can just link them to your tut. He He! Thanks buddy:-)

    Salut.

    Hi
    great tutorial jon!
if you’re animating the objects with complex movements wouldn’t it be easier to do the reflection part with expressions?
You would just have to pickwhip the reflections sets proberties with the animated text proberties and add *-1 at the end of the expressions.
    It’s just a thought 🙂

    Hi Julian,

Thanks for the compliment and yes, it would be faster. As I mentioned, only some of the attributes use positive and negative numbers.
