Corrupted Project File (CS3)
Posted by William Mcqueen on May 26, 2008 at 1:24 amFor some reason, the PPCS3 programme did not auto-save throughout the day, and the latest version (prproj), when windows crashed, was 7 hours previous. And so I worked 8 hours without a recent backup. Is there any way to “fix” a corrupted project file? I suppose there isn’t, but I thought I would ask. Is there a maximum size for the prproj file?
I remember most of what I did, but since titles aren’t saved as separate external files, it means all that tedium will have be done over. Sigh.
Cheers,

May 26, 2008 at 5:03 amTry opening an new project with the same settings as your corrupted project. Then import the actual corrupted project into this new one.
That has saved many deadlines. Hope you haven’t tried this yet and that is works.

May 26, 2008 at 8:49 amAlas, importing the failed project file didn’t work and I got the same error message: “The project appears to be damaged, it cannot be opened.”
Somehow the cow picked up on the problem and pointed me to another thread on the same subject. There were no other real solutions offered.
I guess I’d better get back to see if I can remember what I did.
The one thing I don’t understand is that the auto-save backup didn’t seem to be working correctly, that although it was set for 20 minute intervals, the last saved backup version was stamped at 8 AM (second save for this date) and then no file was saved from then till I saved the file towards 5pm, at which time the crash came. It seems absurd, somehow, that other programmes save a current backup copy of the project file if a programme abruptly closes. It seems strange to me that PPCS3 doesn’t seem to have that feature.
Well, enough rambling…
I’ve forgotten: are you in Van or Vic?

May 26, 2008 at 9:46 pmMake sure the auto-save feature isn’t using a different folder. It will reset itself to different area if you save a back up on a different drive, or if you work from a previous auto-save, it will than auto-save in a subfolder. I woould do a deep search for it, it surely is worth it, and should be there.

May 27, 2008 at 11:23 amThose were all good leads from everybody – thanks ….
But, I have looked extensively, and done different kinds of searches, however PPCS3 did not save a back up for the better part of 8 hours, even though it was constantly saving the original working file.
I manually looked in every possible directory, but no luck. The auto-back up function had been set at the default 5 backup copies, and in the past I’ve noticed that after making 5 backups, PPCS3 will start over, and over-write earlier files, “I think.”
So, I’m setting auto-backup to 15 minutes saves and 20 copies. That should cover 5 hours, I hope. Anyway, the programme did not save any backups for 8 hours and that’s that.
I guess I will just give up and go back and watch carefully from time to time to see if the programme is actually doing an autoback and maybe I’ll do some save as files as well. In my opinion, this should not have happened, I’ve already missed my deadlines. But we live in modern times, everybody I talked with knew what “computer crash” meant.

May 27, 2008 at 2:41 pmPremiere project files are XMl file which means that they are just text. Save the file with another name, like myproject.copy.pprj, open the file in a text editor, not Word, something that only handles text. I’m on Mac so I don’t know what kind of free text editors are available on Windows. Anyway open the file and look for “weird” characters. I found that in some cases unprintable characters are added to file names. Remove those characters and save the file. If you want you can send me the project file via email and I’ll try to fix it. My address is phciccone at gmail dot com.

May 27, 2008 at 7:14 pmI think when someone manually saves the project, it resets the interval time to auto save. I’m constantly hitting
when I’m working and it seems like auto-save never does anything until I go out to lunch (ie. it’s been sitting idle for a little while). I now have my auto-save set to 5 minute intervals which works well for me besides the occasional annoyance of a save when you’re in the middle of doing something.
