I recently completed a documentary project and now I need to go back to make the trailer and update some facts – but find the file won’t open.

The documentary was created in FCP 6, and I have since upgraded to FCP 7. Other FCP 6 files will open in 7, but this will not. In addition, something’s definitely hinky because the file is 251 mb, and shouldn’t be larger than maybe 15mb at most. I’ve gone into the autosave vault and unfortunately, all of the saved projects are like this – it must have been corrupted for quite some time – as are my back-up files.

I have a mirrored HD, so I went into that – with an Apple tech standing by on the phone – deleted FCP 7 and associated files, installed FCP 6 (with updates) with hopes of doing a “save as” to rescue the project, but no luck.

I do have DVDs from TS files, so I can replicate what I have, but cannot correct it.

Apple has washed their hands of this.

Any suggestions to rescue my project? Any help greatly appreciated!

When projs. start to get large it’s good practice to “save as” for another layer of protection. (I know, doesn’t help now)

What about an earlier back up of the proj.?
    Before it was finished maybe?

Thanks – I will definitely do this next time. Geez. External with an additional external back up, mirrored HD, autosave vault, project file saved in multiple places (but all corrupted). And of course this particular issue never occurred to me!

Let me know if anything else occurs to you.

I’ve been advised that if all else fails I can rescue my project with Mpeg Streamclip – import TS files, export w/ DV/DVCPro. This will go straight into FCP timeline, and It looks decent right now, but I have my doubts if I have to recompress to another TS for DVD…

Well, ripping a DVD to edit should be a last resort. DVD’s are heavily compressed.

Too bad v.6 couldn’t open one of the auto saved proj. I know what you’re going through.

Yeah, I have never been better prepared for a disaster – just not this one(!). But what I can I do? Woman plans, God laughs.

Have you tried Digital Rebellion’s FCS Maintenance Pack? It has a utility that can open corrupt FCP projects.

    Hi –
I bought Digital Rebellion and tried their file restorer with no success. I don’t know anything about this program, so perhaps there’s something else I could do?

A friend of mine suggested I import my finished TS files into Mpeg Streamclip, export them using DV/DVCPro, take that file and go back into FCP to make any corrections. I tried it. It’s not ideal, though it’s very close.

Any further thoughts? I’m dealing now with some real potential broadcast outlets. Very nervous!
