correct workflow needed for uprez…
sequence is DVCProHD @ 23.98. footage that still needs to be uprezzed is Beta SP and Digibeta obviously 29.97.
We want to upconvert the 29.97 footage to HD so we can use the original clips in the already edited sequence (1080i 59.94 or 720p 29.97/59.94). What is the best format to upconvert to, so it “just works” in the sequence?
Also, this is probably a basics forum question, but it pertains to this project…since the project was offlined out of house, some basics were done wrong…should have been cut at 29.97 so we don’t have any problems with timecode when uprezzing….
How do I “decompose” (in AVID terms) the sequence so I only have to capture the used parts of the clip? FCP is still new to us here at Broadway Video, and 95% of the projects are in house, we only seem to have issues with outside projects…and I mean EVERYONE OF THEM, lol…..we only do 2, but there are issues with both of them.

You need the AJA Kona 3 for this. I am just wrapping up an article that explains this whole workflow, how to capture beta and digibeta for use in a DVCPRO HD 720p 23.98 project. The card does the upconvert, but it doesn’t do the frame rate conversion. FOr that you need compressor. But you can capture the SD footage as DVCPRO HD 720p59.94, then use Compressor to convert that to 23.98.

It’s called MEDIA MANAGER, and it can create a new sequence (in a new project) with clips (with handles) that only the sequence references. And from that you can recapture. Big section in the manual has the step-by-step. But now you know where to look.

thanks, does media manager take the clips offline? or just decompose the sequence? i did look in there, but under the gun at the time, didn’t have time to fiddle with it…I have used that to consolidate the media from a sequence to another drive, but that copied the media which i didn’t want to do…i’ll check the options again since i have some time in another room.

also, i have done some testing with upconverting through the Kona (which is what we have) and wasn’t very impressed with the quality. we use a Leitch to upconvert, or an SR…and they seem to be very clean…maybe I can go through your article and manipulate it a bit to use the outboard upconverter. Looking forward to it!

It just decomposes the sequence…makes a new project with clips but no media…all ripe for capturing. The media manager does a lot of things…copy, recompress, or this option off making a new sequence for onlining.
Didn’t like what the Kona did huh? I have had good luck. Might help that most of my stock footage was very old film transferred to tape, so it didn’t look that good from the start. But I have upconverted current stuff too and it looks great.
