  • Correct settings for Blu-ray(Europe)

I have been editing up a number of projects … not committed any to Blu-ray disk yet.
What is the correct or most optimum render settings for Blu-ray.( For Europe & Oz)

At front end the projects settings options give:
1920 x 1080 with frame rate of 23.976 (IVTC film) 25 (PAL) or 50 (Double PAL)

    The render options are 1920 x 1080 24p 1920 x 1080 50i or 1920 x 1080 60i

My sources are not interlaced. I am sort of convinced that for modern Blu-ray players & 1080p TV’s then I should stick with 1920 x 1080 24p, until searching here I found this comment:

Yes, PAL countries should use 1080-50i and NTSC countries should use 1080-60i.”

I also tried Sony web site and it states:-
In the Vegas or Movie Studio “Render As” window, select MainConcept MPEG 2 as your format. Then select Blu-ray 1920×1080-60i, 25 Mbps video stream template (select 50i if you are in Europe).”

Why use interlaced ? … if playback is on a full HD system (1080p) why ?
Probably my lack of understanding, would like to understand.

Because Blu-ray is an interlaced format for backward compatibility and if you want to deliver PAL Blu-ray you should use 1080-50i. This will not make a bit of difference in the quality of your image because both fields will be from the same progressive source frame. It’s just how Blu-ray is.

John .. been following this advice … and used the MainConcept 1920×1080, 50i template … but maybe I did not use it correctly.

If I try to render this with frame rate at default (50) it fails with ‘an error occurred while creating the media file
If I set it to 25fps it Renders OK.

I also tried 50fps and set it to progressive – fails with same error message.

What should I be using here? Goal is a Blu-ray compliant 1920×1080 … and assumed for best HD this should be 1080p.

That’s right. You set the frame rate to 50 and Blu-ray only supports 25 fps. You need to use the Blu-ray templates without changing anything except maybe the bit rate if you want them to remain compliant with the spec.
