    I believe this is indee a very basic question…. yet has me stumped…. I’m taking someone else’s 850×480 MOV file and producing a WMV file from it. Even though I’m specifying the dimensions of my project as 840×480, inside Vegas the MOV file is not displaying that way, but is slightly distorted. What’s the best way to fix this?
    – Change the pixel aspect ratio? From square to …. some other setting?
    – Use the Pan/Zoom tool to adjust the dimensions.

    Thanks.

    Try the free utility called GSTOP to see anything you need about a video. Set you project and render to the same and it should look good. DannyDanny

    From your numbers, it sounds like this is a widescreen movie.
    Here are three things to try.
    #1 is to set your project properties to match the source media;
    #2 is to change from square pixels to 0.9091 (NTSC DV) or 1.0926 (PAL DV) if applicable;
    #3 is to try 1.2121 (NTSC DV Widescreen) or 1.4568 (PAL DV Widescreen) if applicable.

    Danny,

    Thanks, but I cannot find GSTOP by Googling or searching this forum. Do you have a URL?

    I’m pretty sure Danny meant to say GSpot/

    Mike,

    Thanks for the suggestions, and thanks for clarifying the “GSPOT” mention.

    I ended up (before reading your suggestions) specifying a custom Pan/Zoom setting for the clips that exactly matched the dimensions of the imported MOV file. This seemed to work. But I’ll keep your suggestions on file for “next time.”
