  • Corner video of myself onto another video editing out my background

Hello, being knew to AE, well I have a basic grasp being a couple of years into it now, however I don’t have a grasp of terminology which makes finding my answers through Google difficult at times. Even folks I hire for graphics I usually make video descriptions of what I request so I manage that way. So I bought a webcam thinking it would be good quality and will film and edit it through OBS Studios (as I found tutorials on how to do) however it is not good quality at all. So without having to make further purchases and go through trial and error, I decided to use my camera. I will record my gaming and film myself with the camera and use that footage in AE making a corner video of myself from time to time to pop in. So I would like to edit out the background and just have a cut video of myself just showing face and shoulders. How can I do this through After Effects, what is this called so I can research it as well? I’m open to Youtube tutorials as well. Thanks!!!

Hi Daniel. By far the easiest way to do this is to key out your background. Have a green screen behind you (it only needs to be around your head and shoulders as you can mask out the rest of the shot – “garbage matt”). There are a lot of “‘greenscreen” tutorials around, look for ones using Keylight which comes with AE. Place your keyed footage on the layer above your other footage and then you can use Opacity to bring it into view when you want to see it. If you don’t use a greenscreen then you need to “mask” yourself out – which is a long and difficult process.

    Hey Daniel,

As Greg suggested, use a green screen when recording yourself + make sure to have plenty of light both on your and the green screen, to get a better key. And, don’t wear green!

Not sure why you want to use AE for this job?

There are plenty of faster ways of doing this, that will give you the same quality, if not higher.
When I say higher, as an example, if you use PPro instead, you’ll have much better audio controls.
One big feature that will save you time is to use Auto-Ducking, so every time you speak, the game audio will fade down to let your voice come through.

Same goes with syncing audio and video up.

And, yes, you can do chromakey, create masks + Zoom/Rotate video in most editing software packages too.

My advice is as you are starting out on this new exciting venture, is not to over-complicate the production process before you have even got started, but instead concentrate on making engaging content.
