copy/paste keyframes in FCP
Posted by Alan Lacey on April 25, 2010 at 5:04 pmSorry I can’t find much info on this via searching.
I’m not a big user of FCP but have been using it for a long time now. To copy & paste keyframes in the motion tab I’ve always created a new keyframe then copied/pasted all the required parameters individually.
Surely there’s got to be a better way than this?
Cheers

April 25, 2010 at 5:46 pmCopy the clip then Edit > Paste Attributes. It doesn’t work the way you want it to (a la AE or Motion).

April 25, 2010 at 6:01 pmThanks kevin, I saw this posting of yours when I searched previously. Don’t think the method helps much though.
Say I just want to dupicate a position and scale keyframe further up the timeline to pause a motion how would I go about doing that using your method?
Thanks for your patience

April 25, 2010 at 6:15 pmSet Start position keyframe. Set keyframe to hold in place or freeze. Set second keyframe to hold in place. Set the final keyframe for position.
Select Clip
Copy Clip
Select destination Clip
Edit > Paste Attributes
Check box for Basic Motion
Click OKDone.

April 25, 2010 at 6:27 pmFCP does what he wants. What’s wrong with copy/paste attributes? Since you have FCS, Motion is available and you can copy/paste keyframes just like AE, so go for it.

April 25, 2010 at 6:53 pmThanks Kevin I’ll give it a go.
Thanks also for your input Dave. I have AE and of course Motion but for such a simple thing either would be overkill. I don’t think I’m asking the earth for a pro application like FCP to provide something as basic as copy/paste keyframes!

April 25, 2010 at 6:55 pmOr almost anything else bar FCP (iMovie and Windows MovieMaker – and I’m not ever sure about that!)

April 25, 2010 at 9:03 pmAlan is right. It’s a pretty basic function and FCP should have it. It’s one of those features that Avid has had forever that I really miss in FCP. I’m sure there is a reason, deep in the ancient code of FCP, that this can’t be implemented now.
Let’s just hope that someone, deep inside the Kremlin…I mean, deep inside Apple Hdqts, is rewriting that code.

Yes this is a basic function, so basic as a matter of fact that the obsolete and now de-funk Live Type has the option to copy and paste keyframes.
Apparently all of the support applications of FCS, like LiveType, and Motion have this ability except the host application.
This is something that is very basic and there really is no sane reason why it should not be in Final Cut.

April 26, 2010 at 1:40 amI’ve been using FCP since version 1, at which time (coming from AVID) I renamed it Workaround Pro. But I love it as much today as I did in V.1, workaround warts and all, and will gladly live with the workarounds before I jump ship and go back to AVID or Premiere. (Although the Mercury Engine in Premiere CS5 is making me THINK…!)
Yes, they’re all just tools, but, dammit, FCP has…character! AND I get the job done! Ever see something like Bruce the Yak in AVID or Premiere?
Girding myself for the flame war….
Best,
Michael Colin
